Tips to help you look amazing in your family photos

This is such a common question, quite rightly as coordinating the family’s outfits for a family or children photoshoot will help create some really eye-catching family photos and will shift the focus to your faces and connection between you.

Don’t head for the shops, first look in your wardrobe

Firstly look carefully in your wardrobe. Is there anything that makes you feel fabulous? Wear something that highlights your best asset during your photoshoot.

Often simple is best

If you are stuck just pick simple things like jeans, beige tops, polo necks, shirts or blouses. These will look great in your family photos. For mums dresses are also beautiful, because they create beautiful lines and they are very feminine.

Comfort first

Don’t try and wear something that is not your style, you want to feel confident and comfortable. This will help to achieve relaxed and natural photos that reflect your family's true personalities.

Neutrals and pastels are a great choice

For an indoor studio photoshoot neutrals and pastels are beautiful. The soft neutrals always bring the focus back to the people in the photos. This timeless look is easy to pull together. Every colour should be muted.

For an outdoor shoot pick earthy tones

For an outdoor shoot warm earthy tones are a really nice contrast with nature colours like shades of green and brown. Perfect colours are chocolate, deep navy, terracotta, mustard, burnt orange, pumpkin and olive. These colours will help you stand out from the background, but also complement the beautiful surroundings.

Don’t match, but coordinate

Matching outfits will make the photos look blend. Pick a favourite outfit for your child and try and coordinate the colours. Layering also helps, a little cardigan or a nice hair accessory for the girls will look very nice.

Add texture

When thinking about texture, choose different ones that will give photos some interest such as lace, corduroy, denim, and knits.

Big logos

Skip logos and words as they draw the eye. You want the focus of the photos to be on your faces, not your clothes.

Large or busy patterns

Stripes can create visual noise and if they are horizontal, they can be unflattering. When picking patterns, choose smaller ones that won’t pull attention away from the main subjects, and only put one person in a pattern.

Tops with no sleeves

You want the focus of the images on your family’s faces and don’t want to show too much flash.

Harsh and neon colours

Distracting for the eye and shifts the focus of the image to the clothes.
